A mobile network outage caused by a timing failure
Australia
DRAFT DE14
An Australian mobile network outage on 8 July 2026 was traced to a timing failure in a replacement time server.
What happened
The Telstra national mobile outage of 8 July 2026 was caused by a timing failure. A replacement NTP chassis in Melbourne powered up with a GPS card lacking a firmware update, which used the previous epoch and calculated a date 1,024 weeks in the past. Around 45% of calls and data sessions were affected and hundreds of emergency calls could not connect.
